In the early 1960’s static model building had begun to become widespread in Italy. Prior to these years model building was limited to a few enthusiasts concentrating mostly on aircraft, naval, and train models. This model building growth affected the younger generation of teenagers and the hobby grew. Many modellers did not want to remain isolated and founded modelling associations.
In Italy there now are many modelling associations, involved in organizing shows and competitions, exchanging information and documentation, making historical researches.
In 2007, several of these associations founded the CIMS - Coordinamento Italiano Modellismo Statico (Italian Static Modelling Clubs Coordinating Group). Its main goal is a better collaboration among the associations, to improve the knowledge of modelling throughout the country.
